At the Society’s 2016 Annual Exhibition, Alan Bond’s fantastic artwork ‘Fleurs du Mal’ was awarded the Glasgow Art Club Award. Now, as a result of that award, Alan’s exhibition ‘Works on Paper’ has opened at The Glasgow Art Club.
Describing the award-winning work, Alan said; “Twelve paintings from my Fleurs du Mal set were included in the SSA 2016 exhibition. The work originated from the experience of having a studio overlooking a London flower market. After a hectic morning of colour and noise, the traders abandoned their unsold flowers in long flat delivery boxes and this rather poignant scene suggested the images I went on to make.
“Although my concerns were mostly technical and formal, wishing to integrate print with painting and representing flowers as strong and robust forms I was aware that the symbolism of flower imagery could not be overlooked and the decision to connect them with Baudelaire’s poem cycle seemed apt. I am delighted that the piece has won the Glasgow Art Club Award.”
The Glasgow Art Club, which has occupied its existing Bath Street premises since 1893, was founded in 1867 by William Dennistoun. Artist members over the years have included James Guthrie and E. A. Walton, along with several other Glasgow Boys.
